A flexible alternative
Flexible thermal generation provides export services to the grid, generating electricity while renewable generation is low or intermittent. Most flexible generation in the UK is currently provided by Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs) or reciprocating engines, known as gas peaking projects.
Crucially, flexible generation can sustain delivery over long periods without the risk of running out of stored energy, unlike more conventional storage technologies. This provides vital energy security, further supporting the transition to renewable energy.
